What is a MEC (Master Executive Council)?

A MEC is the division of the Association Of Flight Attendants that oversees the day-to-day operations of our airline's union. This page will help guide you through the various committees that make up our Master Executive Council.

Employee Assistance Committee is a confidential resource available to the members, their families and their partners to assist with personal, as well a work-related concerns. AFA EAP provides three distinct but interrelated services, including:

  1. Assessment, support and resource referral
     
  2. Advancement of professional standards through conflict resolution
     
  3. Response to critical and traumatic incidents. AFA’s objective in providing these services is to enhance the health, safety and well-being of its union family with the highest quality of peer support available within the EAP industry.

Health And Safety Committee is dedicated to the advancement of air safety for everyone engaged in the movement of airline traffic. The ASHSD (Air Safety, Health And Security Department) has been extremely proactive in helping to address and generate a greater awareness among the flying public, Congress, the FAA and the aviation industry.

Negotiations Committee The duties and responsibilities of the Negotiating Committee shall include the following:

a. The Committee, with the advice of the Staff Negotiator shall have the authority to conclude an agreement, subject to the provisions of the Constitution and Bylaws.

b. All members of the Committee, including alternates whenever possible, shall complete a negotiations training seminar prior to writing an "opener."

c. Committee members shall be familiar with Union policy and keep abreast of new developments in the industry.

d. Committee members shall utilize the facilities and resources of the Union and the experience and knowledge of Union Officers, International Office staff and study committees of the Union. (eg., Legal, Retirement and Insurance, Wage and Working Conditions, etc.).

e. Committee members shall maintain a current record of the:

      (1) Financial condition of the company.

      (2) Management lines of authority and methods of communication.

      (3) Operations statistics and experiences of the airline which may be used in bargaining, grievances, litigation, etc.

      f. Committee members shall be familiar with the wishes of the flight attendant group with respect to wages, working conditions, and work rules, through, for example, system-wide distribution of contract surveys, periodic road shows, etc.

      g. The Committee, with the advice of the Staff Negotiator, shall prepare the contract opener.

      h. The Committee shall provide regular updates to the membership on the status of negotiations through, for example, newsletters, hotlines, telephone trees, etc.

Scheduling Committee is responsible for working with the company's crew planning department to ensure that Bid Lines and Trip Sequences are within contractual limitations.

Info-Rep and Legislative Affairs Committee is a combined committee at American Eagle Airlines. Info-Rep Duties are yet to be determined. Legislative Affairs work closely with the International Office to coordinate efforts on Capitol Hill.

Membership Committee is responsible for ensuring that every Flight Attendant at American Eagle Airlines is a member in good standing. This is accomplished by paying dues. The Membership Committee's additional responsibly include:

  • Each Domicile has a correct and current Roster
  • Members that are in dues arrears are notified
  • Maintain Phone, E-mail, and Home Address Contact Information
  • Sky Fund Committee is a volunteer Committee that was founded by Dallas Flight Attendant Sara Pichelmann. The committee's sole focus is on assisting members who are unable to pay their Dues because of extenuating circumstances.

Grievance Committee is dedicated to protect all Flight Attendants against arbitrary and unjust disciplinary action, uphold and enforce the contract, handle all initial grievance hearings, report the results to the LEC President and the Grievant.

    Additional responsibilities include:

  • 1) Keep Grievance Informed
  • 2) Assist Union Attorneys in the preparation of grievances for System Board
  • 3) Inform the Grievant of the process
  • 4) Keep Membership informed of recent Grievance Decisions
